FAQs
I’ve heard summer swim can be a big time commitment. Is that true?
- That is totally up to you! Practices are offered Monday-Friday throughout the season. Send your kiddo to as many, or as few, as you want to! Most practices are in the morning, but we do offer late afternoon practices twice a week. Practices are a great way to build up swim skills, endurance and friendships!
- Swim meets are typically on Tuesday afternoon/evenings. Arrival time is typically around 4:30 or 5. Our younger swimmers will typically be done by 7 pm; older kids will end no later 10pm (typically around 9pm).
- Keep in mind, some Coach's Candy Cups and awards are tied to commitment and effort at practices.
- *Parents can drop off their swimmer if they are atleast 9yrs old per pool rules. All other swimmers must have an adult present during practice.
What are the expectations from parents?
- Swim team is run by volunteers, and we LOVE our parents! Beyond getting your swimming to the pool, the big ask is around swim meets. We need each family to work one shift per swim meet.
- OR take advantage of our PAY TO PLAY program. Pay $200 and your're off the hook all season. Sit back, hang out with fellow swim parents and cheer your hearts out! We'll find workers on your behalf for all of your volunteer commitments.
- Please review our Redfield Swim Team Rules and Code of Conduct for expectations regarding involvement and behavior.
What are registration fees? Are there any discounts available?
- Check out our registration FAQ page to learn about fees and discounts.
What is Pre-Team? What about my young kiddo?
- Pre-Team is for our young Sun Devils, typically under 5. These little fishies are learning to swim. They already know how to float and are comfortable in the water, but are learning freestyle. Toward the end of the season, these little fishies can participate in the Pre-Team Exhibition to show off how they can swim one lap across the pool (with a coach in the water with them). The crowd will be cheering and blue ribbons will be earned!
Why are 8 and unders split into Suns and Devils? Which group should my swimmer be?
- We typically have A LOT of swimmers between the ages of 6-8. We’ve grouped them by “Suns” and “Devils” to allow our coaches to provide more one-to-one assistance. These groups are flexible and ask that you help judgy which group your child should be in. General guidance is:
- “Suns”: swimming doggystyle or underwater like a fishy; struggles to swim a full lap (if they can’t swim a lap, they may benefit from Pre-team); not yet diving off the side of the pool; a little more anxious than excited about practice; typically on the younger side.
- “Devils”: Swimming freestyle and maybe even backstroke; wanting to improve their technique; comfortable diving/flopping into the pool; on the older side\
I’ve got multiple kids. Can they all practice at the same time?
- No. Practices are grouped by age and swim levels. For safety and to ensure everyone can get the most out of their session, please have your kid swim at their listed time. That said, if their is an unique circumstance, please ask the coaches if they think your child can handle the other group.
What and when are Time Trials?
- Check the schedule on our homepage for the exact date of Time Trials, but it will be before meets start. Our time trials are a casual, come when you can event. Swimmers are typically timed in 2 or more events to help get their "seed" times for meets. Swim gear - googles, caps, suits, shirts and more - will be available for purchase. Swim suits will be available to try on. Typically a potluck, come for this first social event of the swim season!!
Do you offer individual swim lessons?
- Some of our coaches do! Check out the Lessons page to see who and get their contact info!
What does my kid need to wear? Where can I buy Sun Devil gear?
- We will provide caps for each swimmer. Team shirts and swim suits will be available at Time Trials. They are optional but encouraged.
- For practice, swimmers can wear any one piece swimsuit or brief/jammer.
- For swim meets, a team suit OR a black one piece for girls and brief/jammer for boys is required.
What is the Ga Tech/ASA Divisional Meet?
- ASA hosts an optional championship meet at the end of the season, typically the last week of June, at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center (this pool was the site of the 1996 Olympics!!). Any registered swimmer can sign up to attend. The more swimmers we have in attendance, the greater chance we will have to bring home a trophy! Swimmers who have attended in the past have LOVED it; just ask them about it. There is an additional fee associated with attending.
What is ASA?
- Atlanta Swim Association. The Redfield Sun Devils swim team is part of this league and follows rules and regulations determined by the league. Find more information on their website: https://asa.swimtopia.com/
How are meets scored?
- Meet scoring follows ASA guidelines and full information can be found on their website.
