HELPFUL “OLDER PARENT” SWIM MEET TIP:

Swimming can be SCARY for a little kid. I can only imagine the kaleidoscope of crazy going on in their noggins before each event:

“Everyone is looking at ME… Will I do the stroke right... What’s breaststroke… I have to pee… Can I make it across that loooooong pool… What if I swallow water… I have to pee… Will I be first place… LAST PLACE… OH CRAP – MOOOOOOOOOM!”

Next meet, I kindly suggest that parents take a healthy step back and let the coaches take over once the meets begins. I know this will be hard, but this is why we have a rotating staff of 16 coaches onboard to calmly guide your child into the water for a successful night.  At home and before the meet, your job is SUPER important! Talk to them about their events… what is new, challenging or scary… and how Coach Kylie put them in the event because they are capable and AMAZING!

Then once the meet starts, this may sound odd, but let the natural, gentle peer pressure from teen leaders guide your littles into swimming events they may find scary or uncomfortable. (They will be fine -- there are coaches in the water as an extra precaution.) If you give your child “an out” while behind the block – they will take it. This meet, give them a little room to do their own thing/figure it out on their own -- and when they CRUSH their events – it will be so wonderful!
